Peonies, The Manual of the American Peony Society, edited by James Boyd © 1928 American Peony Society: [Descriptive List of Chinese Peonies]:

RED BIRD. (Franklin, 1921.) 8.6.

Anemone type; large; midseason. Broad guard petals and a center of narrow, dull rose-red petaloids; the guards are irregular and undulating, arranged horizontally; tips of petaloids curled inward; carpels greenish white, with red tips and light pink granules at the base. Moderate height; vigorous; floriferous. Average foliage.

Resembles Hatsuegi, a Japanese sort, but seems to be a better flower. Very distinct, with the unusual characteristic that the center is as dark or darker than the guard petals.

RED BIRD (Franklin, 1921) - Double - Red - Midseason. Moderate height. Anemone type; broad guard petals and tall narrow feathery center petals of dull light rose red, suggests the plumage of a tropical bird. Very unusual flower. The guards are irregular and undulating, arranged horizontally; tips of petaloids curled inward; carpels greenish white, with red tips and light pink granules at the base. Vigorous; floriferous; average foliage. "An excellent landscape variety." Mabel L. Franklin. M.
