Description. Stem glabrous, up to i m. high. Lower leaves biternate. Leaflets elliptic to broadly obovate, acute, cuneate at the base, dark green and glabrous above, glaucous and villose beneath. Flowers 9-11 cm. in diameter. Petals concave, broadly obovate, creamy yellow. Stamens 2 cm. long, filaments crimson, anthers yellow. Carpels 2-4, green, glabrous, stigma purple. Follicles 4 cm. Long. Differs only from P.Wittmanniana by the glabrous carpels.

Distribution. western caucasus : Georgia, Tiflis (woods of Pontus and Kolchis), alpine meadows of Abkhazia. This paeony, which is commonly known in our gardens as P.wittmanniana, has been dealt with under the preceding account of the species. This form with glabrous carpels must now be known by Schipczinsky's varietal name of P.Wittmanniana var. nudicarpa to separate it from P.Wittmanniana proper, which has tomentose carpels.
