Lynch's description:

 

Sub-genus Onaepia.

Herbaceous. Petals short and leathery, scarcely exceeding the sepals. N.W.America.

Leaflets ternately divided or pinnatifid, ultimate segments oblong-obtuse, somewhat glaucous.

var. californica (P. californica, Nutt.),

with leaflets bifid or trifid, never pinnatifid, ultimate segments oblong-lanceolate, acute and not glaucous. Appears distinct.
