CHECK LIST OF CHINESE PEONIES IN COMMERCE

THE following Check List contains, separately grouped, all varieties of Double, Single, and Japanese herbaceous peonies of the albiflora group offered in commerce at the time of this Manual's compilation, 1926 to the spring of 1928. Only catalogues of the leading domestic growers and reliable foreign producers have been used in the work.

All varieties which have been rated by the American Peony Society are accorded their symposium rating. Those rated lower than 7.5 have been recommended for discard by the Board of Directors, and the word "discarded" follows the names of all such varieties that are still offered in commerce. It is hoped that before long such varieties will disappear from all worthy catalogues.

Those that are rated 8.0 and better, together with a few between 7.5 and 8.0 which were selected by vote of the Directors, are described in the alphabetical list beginning on page 79. Such varieties are marked with an asterisk (*) before the name. With these varieties there are also brief descriptions of novelties (introductions since 1920), which have not yet been rated. Some of these novelties have already shown outstanding merit, while a few will doubtless find their way to the discard before long.

A peony introduced previous to 1920, which has no rating, can be considered of questionable quality with very few exceptions. An old variety which has no rating can generally be considered as worthless, even if it has not been officially discarded by the American Peony Society.

A great effort has been made to obtain dates of introduction in all cases, and they are only omitted when the search has been futile.

It will be understood, therefore, that the Society does not endorse all peonies mentioned in this list. Only those which appear in the list of descriptions carry such an endorsement. While there may be worthy varieties among the newer introductions, the merits of many of them are not sufficiently well known to warrant description.

The color designations have been taken from catalogues and

in some cases shortened from six or more words to two. They are not intended to be absolutely accurate, but only an indication of color for the reader's convenience.

In the following note Mr. Harry F. Little has explained the basis upon which the List is separated into the Double, Japanese, and Single groups.

"The Chinensis or, more properly, the albiflora peony group has naturally divided itself into three distinct classes—the Singles, the Japanese, and the Doubles. This general classification is now followed in the catalogues of most commercial growers, and it has been adopted by the American Peony Society as a basis for arranging the prize schedules of their National Shows.

"While there are really no fixed peony types between which definite lines can be drawn, the differentiation between these three classes has become so generally recognized that but little confusion now arises from their use.

"Single peonies include varieties of the primary form in which one or more rows of large petals, known as guards, or guard-petals, surround a center of stamens with pollen-bearing anthers, and in which these primary parts are all distinctly differentiated.

"Japanese peonies are next in the process of doubling above the normal single form. They include varieties in which the pollen-bearing stamens have become more or less transformed into staminodes or narrow petaloids, showing vestiges of the yellow of the anthers. The partially transformed stamens may carry a trace of pollen, but are usually not pollen-bearing. The name 'Japanese' is somewhat misleading inasmuch as the varieties of this class are not necessarily of Japanese origin; but because the Japanese people have long admired this type of peony, the name has come to be used to designate the class.

"The group of Double peonies includes all other varieties. They may be semi-double with stamens intermingled throughout the petals, or they may be fully double without stamens. They may be globular or pyramidal in form and may be a true rose type or may develop a crown."
