The Canada Department of Agriculture did some peony breeding work at Morden, Manitoba, (years unknown, possibly the 1940's) and selected about 10 seedlings for evaluation at other stations. Nine seedlings were planted at Indian Head SK in 1957. None were ever named, and I don't believe any have been propagated by nurseries. Two of these still exist at the Indian Head Experimental Farm, others may exist elsewhere (last time I checked Morden had only one) but I suspect most have been eradicated. The ones I have seen are Morden 4702 to Morden 4705 and Morden 4707 to Morden 4711. The two that still exist are Morden 4707, somewhat like Laura Dessert, and Morden 4711, a single magenta-red that holds its flowers close to the foliage. If you want more details or photos of these I can provide them. I have good photos of the two that still exist. Of the others, I have mostly poor photos (overexposed). I wrote the current ornamental plant breeder at Morden some time ago, asking about the history of this breeding program, but he advised he had no knowledge of it. I don't know if any of these records have been archived or not but it didn't appear to me that anyone had bothered to check. All of these are pure lactifloras.
